Church of Christ SermonsHow to Truly Live a Long Life

Most people are interested in living a long life on this earth. They try to eat right, exercise, and get check-ups. But there are Biblical principles by which we can live that would be of far greater value. Listed below are some ‘rules for long life’ and the scriptures on which they are based:

  • Worry less, trust more – Worry has killed more people than hard work. Tension leads to heart problems, high blood pressure, and headaches. We need to learn to trust the Lord to take care of us. Matt 6:31-33, Phil 4:6-7, 1Pet 5:7
  • Ride less, walk more – There is no better exercise than simply walking. People join fitness clubs and then try to find a parking place close to the door. We build gyms and then drive people to the front door. 1Tim 4:8
  • Frown less, smile more – Be happy that you have a family that loves you, friends who care about you, and income that puts food on the table. Prov 15:13
  • Waste less, save more – How much do we end up wasting because it was something that we thought at one time that we ‘just had to have’. There are many ways that we can save if we get serious about it. In everything from food to gasoline, we can make do with less if we want to. Just a little saved from each paycheck will add up to big dividends over the years. Use your blessings wisely. Prov 23:21, Eph 5:15-16, Luke 16:8
  • Hate less, love more – The heart of most of our relationship and church problems is a lack of love. If we claim to be Christians, and do not show love, our religion is useless. John 13:34-35, Eph 5:1-2, 1Pet 1:22
  • Read less, study more – people read more and know less today than ever before about the things related to salvation and eternity. Even those who do read the Bible will often just skim it before or during a Bible lesson. They never really study the scriptures to find out things on their own. If asked a simple Bible question, or called upon to state what they believe, they are speechless. We are responsible to God for knowing the things that relate to His expectations for us. 2Tim 2;15, 1Pet 3:15-16
  • Preach less, live more – Jesus was known for doing what He taught, and He condemned the Pharisees for not ‘practicing what they preached’. We must be consistent in our teaching and actions. We teach others, we teach ourselves also. Rom 2:21-22, James 2:14, 17-18

Doing these things gives one a good chance to live a long life on this earth. But even if God calls us home earlier, we will have a happier life here and can look forward to an eternal home in heaven if we have obeyed Christ. Mark 16:16 “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.”
